PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Kamiak misses chance to beat Mercer Island
Published 10:32 pm Saturday, December 4, 2010
MUKILTEO — It has been 42 years since someone besides Ed Pepple roamed the sidelines as head coach of Mercer Island’s boys basketball team. Now Gavin Cree is the head coach at Mercer Island, and Friday he picked up his first victory with a 72-70 win over Kamiak.
Mercer Island built a 12-point lead with just under three minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but a resilient Kamiak squad responded. The Knights cut that lead to just two points and had a chance to win or tie in the game’s final seconds.
Kamiak sophomore Ron Manchester, who scored 23 points in the game, missed a 3-pointer as time expired that would have given the Knights the non-conference win.
“He was hot and he has the flu right now, so I hope he gets the flu more often if he is shooting like that,” Kamiak coach Cory West said of Manchester’s performance.
But the Knights couldn’t overcome the 22 points of Mercer Island’s Quinn Sterling and the fourth-quarter play of 6-11 center Kha Sherman.
“Quinn Sterling had to shoot 70 or 80 percent from the field,” West said. “I don’t remember him missing many shots, he was on fire.”
Sherman helped the Islanders secure the victory with nine of the team’s 17 fourth-quarter points.
“He’s a load, a big load,” West said of Sherman.
The Knights only allowed one-point in the game’s final 2:40 to help decrease the deficit.
The Knights split their opening non-conference games, beating Archbishop Murphy and losing to the Islanders.
“We are ready for conference to start,” West said. “There are great things to come.”
