The Silvertips successfully found a new home for want-away defenseman Paul Sohor today, trading Sohor to Tri-City in exchange for the rights to winger Zach McPhee.
The 19-year-old Sohor, who spent the past two seasons with the Tips, fell to eighth on Everett’s defensive depth chart and asked for a trade in an effort to get more playing time. The East St. Paul, Manitoba, native joins Tri-City’s large contingent of Manitobans. In 109 career games with the Tips Sohor had six assists.
McPhee, a 17-year-old from Vernon, B.C., was a sixth-round pick in the 2008 bantam draft. He appeared in eight games with the Americans this season, scoring one goal, before being reassigned to the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL. He’s played four games with the Vipers without scoring. Last season with the Okanagan Rockets of the BCMML he had 13 goals and 26 assists in 36 games.
McPhee has good size at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. It is yet to be determined whether McPhee will be joining the Tips or if he will remain with Vernon for the rest of the season.
Last weekend during one of the live blogs there was speculation whether the Tips would be able to get anything in return for Sohor. I can’t tell you how much value McPhee represents, but it’s got to be more than what some were suggesting.
