Everett defenseman Nick Walters was invited by Hockey Canada to attend its U-18 selection camp. Walters was one of 15 WHLers invited, including six defensemen. The camp, for 1994-born players, is July 30-Aug. 2 in Calgary. From that camp Canada will pick its team for the U-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, which takes place Aug. 8-13 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Looking over the list of players invited from the WHL, there’s some incredible potential from that class of defensemen. In addition to Walters, Matt Dumba, Griffin Reinhart, Morgan Rielly, Derrick Pouliot and Ryan Pulock represent one of the most-promising crops of defensemen to come through the WHL in some time. If all goes right for that group, could it be as good as the 1985-born group, which included the likes of Shea Weber, Dion Phaneuf, Brent Seabrook, Mike Green and Braydon Coburn?
