About a week after the Everett AquaSox saw two top Seattle Mariners prospects — Colt Emerson and Jurrangelo Cijntje — depart the team following promotions to Double-A Arkansas, another top prospect is arriving in Everett as a reinforcement.
The Mariners assigned Ryan Sloan, a 19-year-old right-handed pitcher, to Everett on Sunday from Low-A Modesto. Sloan is the fifth-ranked prospect in the Mariners organization, and is first among pitchers. According to MLB, he’s the No. 42 prospect in all of baseball.
With the AquaSox on the road, Sloan is expected to make his debut in Hillsboro against the Hops on Saturday, according to the Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish. After that, Sloan would presumably make his first start at Funko Field in the back stretch of Everett’s six-game homestand against the Spokane Indians from Aug. 19-24.
In his final start with Modesto on Saturday, Sloan struck out five batters across five innings, allowing two hits, no walks and no runs. Across the entire season so far, Sloan made 18 starts and pitched 70.2 innings, posting a 3.44 ERA. His 77 strikeouts lead Modesto, and he walked just 15 batters.
A second-round pick (55th overall) to Seattle in 2024, Sloan truly started to hit his stride in July. Across four starts and 16 innings, Sloan allowed just two earned runs (1.13 ERA) and struck out 20 batters against three walks. He held opposing batters to a .164 batting average.
Sloan allowed four earned runs in his penultimate start with Modesto on Aug. 2, breaking a six-game streak where he allowed one earned run or fewer. Following another shutout appearance on Saturday, Sloan has graduated to High-A.
The 6-foot-5 hurler represents a high-level arm the AquaSox will add to its rotation as it closes out the regular season and competes for the Northwest League Championship next month.
