Mountlake Terrace’s Tony Umayam resigned as head football coach earlier this week. Umayam confirmed his decision to step down in an email to The Herald.
“Having spent 17 years as a player, assistant (coach) and head coach, Terrace football will always have a special place in my heart,” Umayam said in the email. I’m extremely proud about the transformation that took place with this program over the past decade and am grateful to have worked with some excellent student-athletes, a top-notch coaching staff and some wonderful community boosters during that time.
Umayam’s final season as head coach of the Hawks was his most successful. Mountlake Terrace won a school record eight games and advanced to the first round of the state playoffs before being eliminated by Marysville Pilchuck.
“I’m glad that I was able to return with my (coaching) staff for this last memorable season and put a bow on what has been a pretty amazing run the last 11 years for Terrace football.”
Umayam cited increased demands at his day job along with spending more time with his family as the main factors that led to his decision to step down.
