Panthers prevail in rivalry matchup

SNOHOMISH – It’s been a long rivalry, the Wesco North boys tennis equivalent of the Yankees and the Red Sox.
In what has traditionally been a back-and-forth battle, Snohomish got the upper hand Wednesday, sweeping Cascade 7-0 at Snohomish High School in the first of two meetings between the Panthers and Bruins this season.
“We have a real long rivalry,” Snohomish head coach Dick Jansen said. “We’ve been going at each other for a lot of years.”
The Panthers (2-0 in league and overall) won every individual match, but none was contested more than at No. 2 singles.
Jansen said Brandon Kent’s 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over the Bruins’ Sopheak Seng was the “singles match of the evening,” because Kent was able to “pull out a third set victory.”
Since it was also the longest match of the day, all the other Snohomish and Cascade (1-1) players came over to cheer their respective teammates on in the epic duel.
The Snohomish coach said that despite the final score, the match was “well contested” and went on to say that it was a “fairly important match early in the season. Now we’ve got the upper hand, but the shoe’s been on the other foot in the past.”
“There’s no bad blood” between the teams, Jansen said. Just “good, tough tennis.”
