Monroe notches key road victory

STANWOOD — Not perfect, but a critical victory nonetheless.
The Monroe Bearcats overcame what their coach called occasional lapses in intensity to earn a 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 victory over the host Stanwood Spartans in a Wesco North match Tuesday night.
“We need to get a better focus,” Monroe coach Dawn Hansen said. “(Stanwood) played really well … when you’ve had success that’s how it rolls, other teams want to beat you and they step up.”
Monroe (2-0 in division and 6-1 overall) and Stanwood (1-1, 2-5) were locked in a tight battle in the first game, before the Bearcats pulled away. Monroe was led by Kylin Munoz (15 kills) and Kelsey Brennan (10 kills). Kaitlyn Drew delivered 27 assists.
“My kids got a rhythm and got rolling. We were feeding a lot to Kelsey and Kylin,” Hansen said. “When they’re on, it’s good to get them in on some stuff.”
Jerrika Groeneweg added 11 digs for Monroe.
“Our service receive was pretty good,” Hansen said. “That helped us to run our plays.”
Stanwood was led by Kaitlyn Dowd with 15 assists and Leah Titus (10 digs).
“(Stanwood) has gotten a lot better since the last time we saw them,” Hansen said, referring to a non-counting match earlier this season. “I knew it was going to be tougher.”
Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Everett 2: At Everett, April Bobadilla had 32 assists and Jadelyn Thompson had 43 digs to lead the Tomahawks over the Seagulls in a back-and-forth Wesco North match. Everett won the first set 26-24, before Marysville-Pilchuck won the next two 25-16 and 25-13. Everett won the fourth set 25-14, but Marysville-Pilchuck prevailed 15-12 in the tiebreaker. Kristeen Juarez had 14 kills, Emily Boerger had 11 and Anna West added nine for Marysville-Pilchuck (2-0 league, 5-2 overall). Erin Vance had 12 kills and Ally Lund added seven to lead Everett (0-2, 3-4). Jacqui Bayne had 17 assists and Mollie Postma added 12. Lauren Hope had 23 digs and Lana Fingarson had 12 digs and seven blocks to lead the Seagulls.
Cascade 3, Snohomish 2: At Snohomish, Cascade’s Kathleen Salud had 13 digs and Cascade defeated Snohomish 14-25, 26-28, 25-12, 25-16, 13-15 in a Wesco North match. Brianna Byers added nine kills and Danielle Love had six blocks for Cascade (1-1 in league, 1-6 overall). Snohomish (0-2, 3-4) was led by Shannon Nichols (15 assists), Jessica Yates (13 kills, seven blocks) and Alyssa Fjelstad (nine kills).
Oak Harbor 3, Arlington 0: At Oak Harbor, the Wildcats won three straight sets 25-14, 25-17, 25-12, though Arlington’s play impressed Oak Harbor coach Kerri Molitor. “They are kind of scrappy and play good defense,” Molitor said. “It forced us not to make errors.” Becca Wheeler led Oak Harbor (2-0 league, 6-0 overall) with 21 assists and five aces. Clair Thiel had 10 kills, and Jennifer Jansen added nine. Kelsey Czabam led Arlington (0-1, 0-7) with 17 assists. Sheena Apolista had nine digs and Breanna Covey had eight blocks and four kills.
Kamiak 3, Lynnwood 0: At Lynnwood, Devin Larson’s 31 assists led Kamiak to the 25-19, 25-3, 25-19 Wesco South win over Lynnwood. Hannah Harrison added three kills and Julia Church had eight kills for the Knights (1-0 in league, 6-1 overall). Lynnwood (0-2, 1-6) was led by Kaytlyn Dill’s 10 kills and two aces and Stephanie Mohoric’s 13 assists.
Meadowdale 3, Jackson 1: At Lynnwood, Katie Cowan served four aces, recorded 33 assists and had seven digs to help lead Meadowdale to the 25-14, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18 Wesco South victory. Florence Dalos added 10 kills and two blocks for the Mavericks (1-1 in league, 5-2 overall) and Mara Eberth had 13 digs. Angelina Rick had 10 kills and six digs for Jackson (0-1, 2-5) and Christy Cain recorded seven kills and three blocks.
Edmonds-Woodway 3, Mariner 0: At Everett, Leigh Fishback had 29 assists and two aces and Alex Storino added 12 digs to lead Edmonds-Woodway to the 25-11, 25-11, 25-20 Wesco South sweep of Mariner. Erin Lauber added seven kills and three blocks for the Warriors (2-0 in league, 6-1 overall). Mariner (1-1, 3-3) was led by Ludia Gavaoronskiy’s six digs, three kills and three blocks; Shasta Glovoe’s 16 digs, and Jessica Gavaoronskiy’s 14 digs and three kills.
Shorecrest 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, the Scots swept three sets, 25-12, 25-15, 25-9 to take the Wesco South match. Shorecrest (1-1 league, 6-1 overall) was led by Anna Herold’s 20 assists and five aces, Jamie McDonald’s six kills and two blocks, Tori Olsen’s three kills and four aces and Lauren Deatrick’s 15 digs and three aces. Shorewood (0-2, 1-5) was led by Carolina Soules’ five kills and Sara Hefny’s 10 digs.
Mountlake Terrace 3, Lake Stevens 1: At Mountlake Terrace, the Hawks bounced back from a 25-23 first-set loss to win the next three sets 25-20, 25-17, 27-25 to take the non-league match. Christine Jenson led Mountlake Terrace (4-3) with 39 assists. Kori Seidlitz had 12 kills and Kelsey Fleetwood added 11. Anja Pendergraft had 33 digs. Janae Harphan led Lake Stevens (1-5) with 13 kills and Jackie Moe was a perfect 18-of-18 serving.
King’s 3, Coupeville 0: At Shoreline, Kailey Trautmann’s 13 kills and five aces paced King’s in the Knights 25-7, 25-11, 25-10 Cascade Conference win over Coupeville (1-6 in league, 1-7 overall). Laura Friar added six kills and five aces and Anna Cesari had 22 assists for the Knights (7-0, 7-0).
Lakewood 3, South Whidbey 2: At Langley, the Cougars beat the Falcons 16-25, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12 to win the Cascade Conference match. South Whidbey (2-5 league and overall) was led by Lindsey Newman’s nine kills and 11 assists. Allison Wood added nine kills and Kelsey Dorpat had 14 assists. Lakewood’s record improved to 3-4 in league and 4-4 overall. The Cougars were led by Liliya Kibitskaya, who had 10 kills and six digs; Aly Stewart, who had eight kills and eight blocks, and Sarah Boe, who had 11 digs.
Cedarcrest 3, Granite Falls 1: At Granite Falls, Kristen McKinlay had 11 kills and Amber Shields added 18 assists as Cedarcrest defeated Granite Falls 25-20, 23-25, 25-11, 26-24 and moved into sole possession of third place in the Cascade Conference. Shannon Bailey added nine kills for the Red Wolves (5-2 in league and overall). The Tigers (4-3, 4-3) were paced by Michaela Dudder’s 11 kills, 13 digs and four aces.
Archbishop Murphy 3, Sultan 0: Ashley Broadwell and Shannon Hoben each had seven kills and Becca Gotz added six kills to lead Archbishop Murphy (6-1 league and overall) to the 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 Cascade Conference win over Sultan (0-7, 0-7).
Darrington 3, Friday Harbor 0: At Darrington, Mandy Powell had 31 assists and was 10-for-10 serving to spark Darrington (5-1 in league, 6-1 overall) to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-19 victory over Friday Harbor (2-5, 2-6) in the Northwest 1A match. Maggie Wickan added eight kills and three aces for the Loggers.
Shoreline Christian 3, Concrete 0: At Concrete, Shoreline Christian (4-2 in league, 5-3 overall) recorded 21 team services aces in a 25-14, 25-6, 25-16 Northwest 1A/2B League victory over Concrete (0-5, 0-5).
North Sound Christian 3, Grace Academy 0: At Mountlake Terrace, North Sound Christian (5-1 in league, 5-2 overall) swept Grace Academy 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 in the Northwest 1B League match. Crystal Holmes paced Grace Academy (2-3, 2-4) with five kills. Elyse Bunger had nine kills for North Sound Christian. Teammate Tori Patterson had 10 digs, Maylisa Chung had 20 assists and Marissa Orton had six service aces.
