Tommies bounce back

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville-Pilchuck girls soccer team washed out the bitter taste of defeat.

Now they have to wash the mud out of their uniforms.

Kassandra Riozzi broke a scoreless deadlock in the 63rd minute to help lift the Tomahawks to a 2-0 victory over Everett in a muddy Wesco North contest Tuesday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

“It was a pretty sloppy night — pretty wet. There were a lot of misplays,” Tomahawks head coach Geoff Kittle said. “Both teams played a physical game through the match.”

Marysville-Pilchuck lost a tough match to Wesco North leader Snohomish 5-0 on Saturday, a setback that Kittle called “a big disappointment” for his players.

“After the Snohomish game, we threw (that feeling) out — we recomposed and refocused,” Kittle said. “We tried to be more relaxed (against Everett).”

After a scoreless first half, Riozzi one-touched the ball into the net from 18 yards out off a throw-in from Hannah Wood to give the Tommies (5-3-2 in league and overall) the only goal they needed.

Breaking the deadlock seemed to give the Tommies more confidence, Kittle said, and they began to settle and control the ball better. That led to Tanessa Williams adding an insurance score in the 76th minute, one-touching a Melissa Lauer cutback pass into the net from 3 feet out.

Everett (7-3-0) pressed hard in the first half but was unable to solve Tommies goalkeeper Skylar Peterson, who made five of her nine saves in the opening period.

“In the first half (Everett) had way more pressure on us,” Kittle said. “Skylar made a lot of great saves, many on one-on-ones.”

Peterson recorded her third shutout of the season with the victory.
