MOUNT VERNON — Everett’s Andy Monro capped his senior season with a 3A District 1 boys tennis singles championship Friday at Mt. Vernon High School.
In a rematch of the Wesco 3A final between Monro and Shorecrest’s Ricardo Cellis — from which Cellis was forced to withdraw with a knee injury — Monro won 6-2, 6-2.
“We had some good rallies,” Monro said. “My serve was in. I had some good net play. My baseline felt solid. I just wore the guy down.”
Monro is an atypical district champion. He hasn’t been a regular club player. He said he began playing recreationally in the eight grade. Since then he has had a couple of lessons and “hit at the club a few times.”
Monro earned his first trip to the 3A state meet in May. He was an alternate last season.
“It’ll be a good year,” Monro said.
Cellis plays consolation survivor Jason Hollenbech of Shorecrest for a second state berth today.
The Meadowdale team of Pat Donnelly and Jake Haight won the doubles championship and a trip to state, defeating Brian Sharkey and Matt LaCourse of Shorecrest 6-1, 6-2 in the final. Sharkey and LaCourse play consolation survivors Tyler Hanson and Duncan Linn of Ferndale for a second state berth today.
