Wesco athletes could win state swimming championships

If youth is served, Wesco teams will produce some tender-aged champions at this weekend’s state meet.
The Class 3A meet begins at 5:30 p.m. today with diving prelims at the King County Aquatics Center. 3A swim prelims are scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Friday with 4A prelims at 5:45 p.m. 3A finals are set for 10:45 a.m. Saturday with 4A finals at 5:45 p.m.
Four Wesco swimmers go into the meet seeded first in their respective events. Two are freshmen. Two are sophomores.
Two are from Snohomish.
Panthers freshman Melissa Randolf is ranked No. 1 in the 50-yard freestyle with a state-best time of 24.52 seconds. Randolf has the fifth-best time in the 100 butterfly. Her sophomore teammate, Emily Ferreira, is seeded first in the 100 breaststroke with an all-America consideration time of 1:06.04. Ferreira is seeded fifth in the 200 individual medley.
Snohomish has also qualified in all three relays. The Panthers are seeded fourth in the 200 medley relay, 11th in the 200 freestyle relay and second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Jackson sophomore Alana Pazevic goes into the meet with the top time in the 100 freestyle. Her best time of 51.90 is also an all-America consideration time. Pazevic is also seeded second in the 100 backstroke with an all-America consideration time of 58.56.
Shorecrest freshman Alaina Mordkhin is seeded first in the 3A 200 individual medley with an all-America consideration time of 2:07.09.
Other Wesco swimmers seeded highly in the 4A meet include: Marina Pomar-Enders of Jackson (sixth, 200 freestyle; eighth, 500 freestyle), Tara McIntyre of Shorewood (eighth, 200 freestyle), Stephanie Ha of Jackson (eight, 200 individual medley) and Laurin Williams of Shorewood (fourth, 500 freestyle).
Everett’s Martha Pohl is seeded third in the 3A 100 breaststroke.
