Kamiak sets school record

MARYSVILLE — A hot start and team depth helped the Kamiak boys swim team earn a victory in an early-season showdown of unbeatens.

The Knights swept the relay events — setting a new school record in the process — en route to defeating Marysville-Pilchuck 103-83 in a non-league meet Tuesday afternoon at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Kamiak started the meet in record fashion, with the 200-yard medley relay team of Patrick Hunziker, Chris Lynch, Rayan Carter and Tyler Carriker winning their event in a time of 1 minute, 43.41 seconds — both a state qualifying time and, by seven one-hundreds of a second, a new school record.

“We didn’t know it was a school record for sure,” Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson said. “There was a lot of discussion on the sideline but we found out for sure when we got back to our pool.”

The Tommies’ 200 medley relay team of Gabe Lopez, Spencer Girard, Trevor LeValley and Aaron Goff finished right behind with a state time of 1:44.15.

The Tommies won six of the remaining nine individual events, but Kamiak’s depth helped seal the victory as the Knights earned points for swimmers finishing second through fifth.

“The key was Kamiak swam well in every event,” Marysville-Pilchuck coach Scott Knowles said. “It was (Kamiak’s) third guy in individual events that won the meet. We had one fifth (-place finish) and a whole lot of sixths.”

Erickson partly agreed with that assessment, adding the performance of Kamiak’s relay teams — the Knights finished first and third in all three relay events — was “the biggest part of our win … everything else was pretty close to a wash.”
