Stanwood can’t hold early lead against Mt. Vernon

STANWOOD — For the Stanwood Spartans, it’s too bad a basketball game lasts four quarters.
After jumping to an 18-9 lead in the first period, Stanwood ended the half with a slim two-point advantage over Mount Vernon. The second half became Stanwood’s downfall as the Bulldogs won the non-conference game 60-50 on Saturday night.
“We came out and executed well in the first half,” said Stanwood head coach Zach Ward. “But we didn’t make adjustments.”
One such adjustment was keeping the ball away from 6-foot-6 senior Eric Jensen, who led Mount Vernon with 24 points and six 3-pointers. Teammate Michael Caswell recorded 17 points.
“They shot the ball really well,” said Ward. “We couldn’t find shooters.”
Kale Schmidt led Stanwood with 17 points and Zack Johnson added seven points and six rebounds.
