Vikings take step toward state

MONROE — The Lake Stevens girls basketball team took the first step towards a big goal Friday night.

The Vikings clinched a 4A District 1 playoff berth with a 62-38 Wesco North victory over Monroe at Monroe High School.

Karri Gallagher, Mary Ochiltree and Brittany Tri each scored 15 points in leading the undefeated Vikings (10-0 in league, 14-0 overall) to victory.

“Anytime you can secure a playoff berth it’s the sign of a good year. It’s nice to know that we have a shot at what we want to get back to, which is the Tacoma Dome,” Lake Stevens head coach Randall Edens said, referring to the Vikings ultimate goal of a third consecutive 4A state tournament berth.

The Vikings came out of the half playing solid team defense, slowing down the Bearcats and holding them to 14 second-half points.

Alona Personius led the Vikings’ defense with seven steals to go with her 10 points.

The Vikings’ twin towers of Gallagher (11 rebounds) and Tri finished with 17 total rebounds.

“Defensively, in the second half, we cranked it up a bit. It’s been a big focus for us all season long and we know if we’re going to be successful in the postseason you’ve got to play defense,” Edens said.

Brittany Matkins led Monroe (3-7, 4-10) with 13 points.
