Snohomish lacrosse team wins Best of the West tourney

The Snohomish girls lacrosse team dominated the competition in winning its division at the Best of the West tournament held March 1-2 in Las Vegas.

Snohomish, playing in the high school division, outscored its opponents 86-13 and was the only team in the tournament to go undefeated (6-0). Goalie Daniel Bergquist recorded two shutouts, and Sayre Creighton and Meaghan Hess led the team with 14 goals apiece.

Snohomish defeated Murray, a team from Utah, 8-4 to win the title on March 2. Earlier in the day, Snohomish beat Bonanza, from Nevada, 11-1 in the semi-finals, and Park City — the Utah varsity state champion — 9-6 to win its pool.

On the first day of the tournament, Snohomish recorded shutouts to bookend the start of pool play, beating Bishop Gorman of Nevada 20-0 in its first game, and Xavier Prep of Arizona 25-0 in its third match. In between, Snohomish defeated West Side of Nevada 13-2.

Also playing for Snohomish were Mikala Trott, Calista Klein, Jen Courtney, Sarah Courtney, Heather Mullins, Kate Bratz, Erin Flotte, Emily Henderson, Hannah Price, Alyssa Retallick, Angela Jennings, Allie Boyd, Devynn Barela, Natalie Siderius, Katarina Rentko, Ashley Jensen and Raquel DeQuilettes.

Snohomish was coached by Craig Hess and Bob Courtney was the team manager.

Basketball

Muri, Clauson honored by their conference: Southern Oregon University senior Chelsey Muri, who helped lead the Raiders to a 26-4 regular-season record and a share of the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular-season title, was named the conference’s player of the year on March 2.

Concordia University forward Danielle Clauson was selected the conference’s freshman of the year.

Muri, whose maiden name is Zimmerman, is a Monroe High School graduate.

She finished the 20-game regular season ranked in the top 10 in the league in six statistical categories, including scoring (third, 17.0 point per game), field-goal percentage (ninth, .481), steals (second, 2.70), assists (10th, 3.15) and free-throw percentage (10th, .765). The Raiders went 17-3 in CCC play to share the regular-season title with Eastern Oregon.

Clauson, a King’s alum, helped Concordia to a 15-16 record and the fifth seed in the conference tournament. She led the Cavaliers in a host of statistical categories, including points, rebounds, assists and steals, and was ranked third in the league after shooting 51.8 percent from the floor for the season.

Harter makes all-conference team: Puget Sound University senior Morgan Harter was named to the All-Northwest Conference second team last month.

Harter, an Edmonds-Woodway High School graduate, led the conference in 3-point field goal percentage, making 44 percent of her attempts, and averaged 10.1 points per game.

Brewe, Swanson selected to all-academic squad: Seattle University juniors Leigh Swanson and Quinn Brewe were named last week to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.

It is the second straight selection for both Swanson, a Mountlake Terrace High School graduate, and Brewe, a Meadowdale alum. Brewe maintained a 3.80 grade-point average while majoring in English. Swanson had a 3.42 GPA as a marketing major.

Swanson finished the regular season for the Redhawks men’s team in the top five in the league in field-goal percentage, field goals made, free-throw attempts, rebounds, and points per game.

Brewe led the Redhawk women’s team in rebound average and defensive rebounds, and was in the top five for blocked shots, field-goal percentage, minutes played, points per game and scoring average.

Bowling

Edmonds wins state championship: The Edmonds-Woodway boys bowling team won its division at the 44rd annual Washington State Bowling Proprietors’ Association (WSBPA) High School Varsity Bowling Championships on Feb. 24 at Bowlero Lanes in Tacoma and Paradise Village Lanes in Spanaway.

Edmonds-Woodway recorded 9,339 scratch pins and edged Bethel 43.5-42.5 to win the Division II title at the two-day, 10-game tournament. Mariner finished sixth in the division, Everett was 11th and Lake Stevens finished 12th.

In Division I, Oak Harbor finished fourth and Cascade was sixth.

Mountlake Terrace was third in Division III.

Gymnastics

Leading Edge gymnasts make strong showing: Gymnasts from Everett’s Leading Edge Gymnastics Academy finished first overall in five of six levels at the 2008 Pacific Northwest Invitational hosted by Puget Sound Gymnastics on Feb. 2-3 in Puyallup.

Lily Gaffney placed first overall in Level 9 with 36.950 points, including finishing first in the vault (9.200), bars (9.400), and floor exercises (9.400). Madison Podlucky placed second overall (36.250) and Haily Luong was fifth (35.825).

In Level 8, Jordan Widener was first overall (37.550) with first-place finishes on vault (9.450) and in the floor exercises (9.650). Jazrelle Kellough placed second overall (37.100), with a first on bars (9.525), and Kendall Watts placed third overall (36.525).

Tasha Del Pozo placed first overall in Level 7 (37.250) with a first on the beam (9.650), and Danielle Wilson finished second overall (36.935) with a first in the floor exercises (9.650). Samantha Podlucky placed first on the vault (9.550).

In level 6, Kaitlin Brame finished first in the all-around (36.550), with first-place performances on the vault (9.600) and in the floor exercises (9.150), and Jillian Ohlemeier placed second overall (36.975) with a tie for first in the floor exercises (9.125). Kasandra Numair was third overall (35.950) with a first on the bars (9.350).

Brooke Allen placed first in the all-around in Level 5 with 37.000 points, including finishing first on the bars (9.550) and second on the beam (9.300). Hanna Luong placed second (36.900) overall with a first on vault (9.250), and Alexandra Carney tied for fourth place in the all-around (36.750).

In Level 4, Laura Bennison finished third overall (36.850), Mari Hsieh was fourth in the all-around (36.700) with a first on the bars (9.450) and the beam (9.450).
