Shorewood pitcher holds Mariner in check

EVERETT — The Shorewood Thunderbirds outlasted the Mariner Marauders and the weather in what Shorewood’s head baseball coach Wyatt Tonkin called, “the coldest baseball game I’ve ever played in.”
Shorewood (2-0 in league, 4-1 overall) received solid pitching performances from junior Cole Clerjet and sophomore Harrison Torrence. Clerjet went five innings, striking out four and walking one, earning his second victory of the season.
“(Clerjet) was the difference for us. He held (Mariner) in check until our hitters could get to them,” Tonkin said.
Torrence, a southpaw, came into the game and pitched a “gutsy performance” by getting out of a sixth-inning jam. He earned his first save of the season.
Tonkin said the frigid weather played a big part in both teams’ performances on Thursday.
“The weather definitely made conditions difficult for both teams,” Tonkin said.
Colin Walker reached base three times for the Thunderbirds.
