SHORELINE — It took two overtimes, but the Shorewood Thunderbirds finally asserted their soccer supremecy in the city of Shoreline, defeating crosstown rival Shorecrest for the second time this season on Friday night, this time by a score of 2-1.

“We always approach every game like we have to win,” Shorewood coach Mark Wisdom said. “So far we’ve shown that we’re the quality team that everybody doesn’t understand.”

The Thunderbirds started the scoring early as Alex Bresnan scored off an assist from Sam Olson in the third minute.

Shorecrest answered five minutes later when Michael Harris scored an unassisted goal.

That was all the scoring for the next 80 minutes.

Shorewood put an end to the game in the 88th minute.

Safaa Al-Jelahawai picked up a pass from Steve McGinley at the 30-yard line, then beat the Shorecrest defense and found the back of the net for the victory.

“We’d been pounding on their goal all night,” Wisdom said. “We were in the right place at the right time.”

With the victory, the Thunderbirds improve to 8-1-1 to maintain sole possession of first place in the Wesco South standings.
