Stanwood sweeps front-running Snohomish
Published 11:24 pm Tuesday, April 22, 2008
SNOHOMISH — Playing fundamental baseball can lead to a victory, or a two-game sweep at the hands of a division rival.
Josh Docken and Doug Joyce delivered big hits, Stanwood’s defense came up with crucial plays, and the Spartans defeated Snohomish 6-4 on Tuesday, completing a two-game sweep of their Western Conference North Divison foes.
“It was a game of big hits,” Panthers coach Kim Hammons said. “Stanwood delivered with two home runs and three doubles — and they all led to runs.”
A victory Tuesday would have clinched a Class 4A District 1 playoff berth for Snohomish (10-2 in league, 13-3 overall). Instead, the Panthers dropped into a tie with Monroe — a 5-2 victor over Arlington on Tuesday — for first place in the division.
The Spartans (8-6, 10-7), which defeated Snohomish 3-2 on Friday, swept the season series with the Panthers by playing by-the-book baseball.
“In the two-game series Stanwood did not make an error,” Hammons said. “Plus they took advantage of every walk, every error we made by delivering big hits.
“Excellent fundamental baseball.”
Although the Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, two errors led to a Stanwood run in the second and Joyce followed a walk and another error in the third with a three-run home run to put the Spartans ahead for good.
Docken led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, and Joyce doubled home Patrick Bliss in the fifth to close out Stanwood’s scoring.
Hammons said Docken’s solo shot was “really the key hit of the game,” and then described Joyce’s RBI double as “the icing on the cake” for the Spartans.
Joyce was 2-for-4 with four RBI and Docken finished 1-for-1.
The Panthers had four hits in the first inning but didn’t get another hit until the seventh. Even so, Snohomish had chances to score, but couldn’t push any runs across the plate, even after loading the bases in the fourth and fifth innings.
“We hit the ball hard, but we hit the ball right at people,” Hammons said. “We left nine men on base (on Tuesday) and nine in the first game with Stanwood. We just did not get that clutch hit.”
Tom Chandler was 1-for-1 with a double for the Panthers and Derek Jones finished 2-for-3 with two singles.
Both Snohomish and Monroe face other division rivals in two-game series today and Friday, before facing off for their own two-game series next week.
Hammons said the Panthers are taking their sweep at the hands of the Spartans in stride.
“I told the team ‘we hit the ball hard, but that’s baseball.’” Hammons said.
