PREP BASEBALL: Snohomish clinches district playoff berth

SNOHOMISH — It would appear the defending 4A state runner-up Snohomish Panthers are back on track.
Snohomish rebounded from a two-game sweep at the hands of red-hot Stanwood to defeat Lake Stevens 6-1 on Wednesday.
In doing so, the Panthers became one of the first Wesco North baseball teams to clinch a spot in the 4A District 1 tournament.
“It feels good to get back in the playoffs,” said Snohomish coach Kim Hammons. “We learned a lot about our club and what adjustments we needed to make (in the two losses to Stanwood), and moved on.”
The Panthers opened the bottom of the first inning with four consecutive singles. Snohomish used a sacrifice fly, a walk, a Lake Stevens error and another hit en route to scoring five runs in the first inning.
Snohomish’s Brian Wolfe pitched a three-hitter, allowing just a solo home run to Ben Nelson in the sixth inning while striking out three and walking only one.
“Brian Wolfe had a very good game and we jumped ahead pretty early in the first,” Hammons said. “Our defense played well behind him. He was always ahead in the count.”
Braden Allen was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Bryce Meinhold was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Snohomish.
Wednesday’s contest was originally scheduled to be played at Lake Stevens, but wet field conditions moved the game to Snohomish. The teams conclude their series Friday at Lake Stevens High School.

It was good to see the kids celebrate a home run like that.” Greg Cranson homered twice for the Timberwolves in a game that featured six home runs.
