Snohomish moves into first

LAKE STEVENS — Snohomish took first place atop Wesco North Tuesday night and dealt host Lake Stevens a serious blow in its quest to lock up the league’s fourth and final district playoff spot.
“Perseverance,” Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey said. “From a character standpoint, this was huge.”
Snohomish overcame injuries, missing players, and a game-winning goal that was cancelled by a penalty to outlast Lake Stevens 3-2 in overtime.
Brian Holguin hit a 30-foot goal in overtime that brought Snohomish running on to the field in celebration before it was canceled by the linesman, who called offsides.
Somehow, the Panthers shook it off and Collin Steranka scored to end the game.
“I give (Lake Stevens) credit,” Pingrey said. “It was not an easy way to lose. They played well.”
Lake Stevens (7-5-3) came out strong behind Scotty DeOliveira, who scored in the 36th minute off an assist from Zach Wagner to hand the Vikings a 1-0 lead, and then scored again at just under 60 minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
Snohomish player Thomas Sheets took a cleat to the face in the first half and had to come out for stitches, joining a handful of hurt or sick Panther players.
“They stepped up in the first half, and we didn’t adapt,” Pingrey said. “(But) in the second half we kept getting better and better.”
Goalie Scotty Lane set the tone for Snohomish in the second half by making a diving one-handed save to punch the ball over the goal post and Diego Robayo scored goals in the 53rd and 56th minute to pull Snohomish to 2-2 tie and set up overtime.
“Amazing…,” Pingrey said of Lane’s play. “Great effort across the board.”
The Snohomish win coupled with Marysville-Pilchuck’s 1-0 loss to Arlington let the Panthers (12-2-1) sneak into the Wesco North’s top spot. Monroe meanwhile, defeated Oak Harbor 3-1 to move past Lake Stevens for the Wesco North’s fourth spot.
