Get a zippy library card in Everett

Everett residents can choose from any one of five library card designs. Each is available as a key chain or standard library card.

“This is the first redesign of our cards in many years,” library director Eileen Simmons said. “People have been asking us for a key-chain-style card for quite a while, and since we were beginning to run out of our old cards, we took the opportunity to change the way the cards look.”

The cards were designed by graphic artist Kevin Duncan.

With the new system, staff will no longer print photos on the actual library card. The photos will display on your patron record at check-out — a good way to ensure that the person checking out materials is the person who registered for the card.

You can still keep your old card if you prefer.

Where to recycle cell phones

The Snohomish County Center for Battered Women offers a cell phone recycle drive. Phones are used for two reasons.

Old cell phones can still dial 911 when charged, even if there is no service. Cell phones may be given to victims of domestic violence to help keep them safe.

Phones can recycled to centers that will pay from 50 cents to $10 per phone to support services for clients.

Bring old cell phones to the New &Again Thrift Shoppe at 3116 Rucker Ave. in Everett or visit www.snococbw.org for other locations around the county. If you are interested in organizing a cell phone collection point, call 425-259-2827, ext. 13, or e-mail julie@snococbw.org.

Grant applications due Saturday

The Human Services Endowment Fund, in honor of former County Executive Bob Drewel, will award $22,000 in grants, more than double the amount of money it granted last spring.

All nonprofit human-services organizations based in Snohomish County are eligible to apply. Applications must be received or postmarked by Saturday. Applications are at www.greatereverettcf.org/grant/available.php.
