Prep swimming/volleyball: Strategic move pays off for Kamiak in win over Edmonds-Woodway

MUKILTEO — Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson and his staff decided to try something different at their meet with Wesco South co-leader Edmonds-Woodway on Tuesday.

They held Knights standout Louise Moores out of the 200-yard medley relay — won by Kamiak by less than a tenth of a second — which freed her up to win the 200 freestyle, the 100 backstroke and swim legs on the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. The result was a 108-72 Kamiak victory.

Nathalie Klein won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, the latter in state-qualifying time to join Moores in leading the Knights to the win.

“Obviously those two were our big stars, but our whole team swam well,” Erickson said. “There were a lot of close exciting races, but those two led the way.”

Moores’ time in the 100 backstroke was a Class 4A state meet qualifying time.

Danielle Holstein won the 500 freestyle (5:25.68), Ashley Jay won the 100 freestyle (56.07) and Melissa Pond won the 100 butterfly (1:11.72) to lead the Warriors.
