Arlington

Mexican art is focus of craft class for kids

Children and their families have a chance to learn to about traditional Mexican paper cutting with local artist Beatriz Diaz Goodpasture.

The class is 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Arlington Library, 135 N. Washington Ave.

Using scissors, tissue paper and their imaginations, class participants can create flags to take home.

The class is supported by the Friends of the Arlington Library.

Camano Island

Learn best techniques for tree planting

Fall is a great time to plant trees.

A class that offers suggestions for tree selection and proper planting techniques is 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.

Arborist Zsofia Pastor also plans to talk about how to create a natural landscape and use sustainable gardening practices.

The presentation is part of a series by the Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks.

Granite Falls

High school boosters plan 5K run Saturday

The Granite Falls Tigers “Ma and Pa’s Booster Club” is sponsoring a 5K run during the Railroad Days celebration in Granite Falls on Saturday.

The run starts at 9 a.m. in Granite Falls. The event is co-sponsored by the alternative school and the Tigers cross country team. Registration may be done in advance or on-site.

Book sale to provide funds for library

Friends of the Granite Falls Library’s Railroad Days book sale is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday at the library, 815 E. Galena St.

A large selection of new and gently used books are to be offered for sale.

Proceeds benefit Friends of the Library programs for children and adults.

Marysville

Order of the Eastern Star plans holiday bazaar

Afton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star is planning its second annual holiday bazaar for Nov. 1 in Marysville.

The event is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Masonic Hall, 419 Columbia Ave. Lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a small fee.

The group is still seeking vendors. Tables are available for $10.

Whidbey Island

Island County sheriff to host community meeting

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown plans to host a community outreach meeting for those who live on central and north Whidbey Island.

The meeting is 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Heller Road Fire Station, 2720 Heller Road, Oak Harbor.

Brown plans to talk about the future of the sheriff’s office, with topics that include manpower, crime statistics, the 911 call center and budget requests.

Citizens are encouraged to attend to ask questions and offer suggestions.
