Prep roundup: Everett hands Lake Stevens its first loss

LAKE STEVENS — In the first clash of the two teams atop the Wesco North standings, Everett came out on top, defeating Lake Stevens 3-0 Thursday at Lake Stevens High School.

“It was a great game by both teams,” Everett head coach Kosta Pitharoulis said. “Both teams really worked hard.”

Everett (6-1-1 in league and overall) scored three goals in a 10-minute span to jump out to the lead before halftime. Kylie Beeson scored the first goal in the 30th minute, followed by Cammie Monro in the 36th and Sele Vance in the 40th.

When it came time to praise his players, Pitharoulis was quick to point out the work of senior defender Valerie Stahl.

“She’s our captain and anchors our defense,” Pitharoulis said. “She had an exceptional game.”

Senior Emily Nesting recorded her third shutout of the year for the Seagulls.

Pitharoulis was impressed by the play of Lake Stevens midfielder Annie Thomas. Kaitlin McKenzie was the goalkeeper for the Vikings (7-1), who suffered their first loss of the season. They still lead Everett in the standings by two points.

“It was a good game and we hope to continue the momentum through the rest of the season,” Pitharoulis said. But “we’re still chasing them.”

Arlington 2, Stanwood 2 (2 OT): At Arlington, Kristina Longosky scored the game-tying goal with 10 minutes to play and Arlington and Stanwood tied in the Wesco North game. Reggie Smithson scored the Eagles first goal. Jenny Maley and Heather Skeels each scored a goal for Stanwood. Stanwood goalkeeper Haley Haugstad prevented the go-ahead goal in overtime for the Spartans (4-2-2 in league and overall). Chelsea Boulton was in goal for the Eagles (4-3-1).

Snohomish 4, Oak Harbor 0: At Snohomish, Courtney Johnson had a hat trick for Snohomish in the Wesco North victory. Juliette Desmarais, Cameron Barney and Shelby Beeman each assisted a Johnson goal. Shillia Crosby scored the fourth goal for Snohomish. Cory Brown earned the shutout in goal for Snohomish (3-5 overall). Oak Harbor’s (1-7) goalie was not reported.

Monroe 2, Marysville-Pilchuck 1: At Monroe, Kaylie Sowler and Kaitlyn Chesemore each scored a goal for Monroe in the Wesco North game. Dani Philippart stood in goal for the Bearcats (3-3-2 league and overall). Kayla Thistle had a goal to keep the Tommies (1-6-1) close and Lauren Schoonover was the goalkeeper for Marysville-Pilchuck.

Shorewood 1, Glacier Peak 0: At Shoreline, Kayli Kamacho had the lone goal of the game in the 31st minute to lead Shorewood to the Wesco South win. Madison Hollenbeck recorded the shutout for the Thunderbirds (1-0 league, 7-0-1 overall). Glacier Peak’s (0-1, 3-4-1) goalkeeper was not reported.

Kamiak 4, Lynnwood 1: At Mukilteo, Lauren Luke, Cassidy Seckman, Rachel Simmons and Carly Thomson scored goals and Hillary Hermes added a pair of assists as the Knights (1-0 league, 3-3-2 overall) defeated the Royals (0-1, 0-7-1) in the Wesco South opener for both teams.

Mountlake Terrace 4, Mariner 0: At Edmonds, Corinne Pingul and Ariana Curva each had two goals to lead Mountlake Terrace to the win in its’ first Wesco South game of the season. Amy Deller and junior varsity callup Ashley King split time in goal for the Hawks (1-0 league, 1-7 overall). Freshman Sandra Reyes was the goalkeeper for Mariner (0-1, 0-8).

Jackson 1, Edmonds-Woodway 0 (2OT): At Everett, Cara Wegner scored the game-winner off an assist from Megan Bolmes as the Timberwolves (1-0 league, 6-1-1 overall) defeated the Warriors (0-1, 4-3-1) in the Wesco South opener for both squads. KC Wilson recorded the shutout at goalkeeper for Jackson.

Meadowdale 1, Shorecrest 0: At Lynnwood, Julia Fjortoft scored an unassisted goal in the 38th minute and goalkeeper Tanya Zickefoose made 16 saves and recorded the shutout as the Mavericks (1-0 league, 7-1 overall) defeated the Scots (0-1, 4-2-2) in the Wesco South opener for both squads.

Cedarcrest 4, Lakewood 1: At Marysville, Clare O’Donnell had a goal and an assist as the Red Wolves defeated the Cougars in a Cascade Conference game. Brooke Chapman, Rachael Kevin and Erin Kearney also scored for Cedarcrest (5-2 league, 6-2-1 overall). Maddie Chamberlin scored the lone goal for Lakewood (2-5, 3-6).

Granite Falls 7, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Cacia Stevens and Kaitlan Howell each scored two goals and Katie Cashman, KatyAnn Powers and Rose Livermore each added a goal a piece leading Granite Falls to the Cascade Conference victory over Sultan (0-6 in league, 0-8 overall). Kelsey Carlson and Sarah Hensley combined on the shutout for the Tigers (4-3, 5-3).

South Whidbey 4, Coupeville 1: At Langley, Karissa Thomas had a pair of goals for South Whidbey in the Cascade Conference victory. Julia Iversen and Jessica Manca both had unassisted goals for South Whidbey and Laurie Robinson earned an assist. Kaitlyn Phillips scored Coupeville’s lone goal. Natasha Kamps tended goal for South Whidbey (4-3 league and overall). Joelle Anthony was Coupeville’s (1-6, 1-8) goalkeeper.

King’s 1, Archbishop Murphy 0: At Shoreline, Alexa Hughes was the goalkeeper for the Wildcats. No other deetails were reported.

Volleyball

Snohomish 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, Natalie Kaltbrunner had 17 kills as Snohomish swept Shorewood 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 in the non-league match. Larissa Dirks, Shelbey Souther and Joanna Balin each had 10 kills for the Panthers (5-1 overall). Shorewood (3-2) was led by Ashley Baker’s five kills and Hannah Stoeve’s seven kills and three blocks.

Arlington 3, Glacier Peak 0: At Snohomish, Bre Covey had 11 kills for Arlington in the 25-14, 28-26, 25-17 non-league victory over Glacier Peak. Arlington (3-3 overall) setter Kelsey Czaban had 30 assists and teammate Kirstin Write had 33 digs. Olivia VanDlac of Glacier Peak (0-5) had eight kills and an ace and teammate Jackie Eagan had four kills two aces and one and a half blocks.

Shorecrest 3, Stanwood 0: At Shoreline, Jamie McDonald had nine kills and two blocks, Kerry Clavadetscher had 14 assists, Gloria Tseng had six kills and 16 digs and Casey Axelson had 16 assists as the Scots (2-2 overall) dealt the Spartans (5-1) their first loss of the season in non-league action.

Cascade 3, Jackson 2: At Everett, Cascade (2-4 overall) bounced back from a 2-1 deficit to win the non-conference match against Jackson 25-23, 15-25, 29-31, 25-14, 15-12. Kaitie Brush had 16 blocks and five kills for the Bruins and teammate Esther No added 22 digs. Haley Sharpe led Jackson (1-4) with 42 assists and Christy Cain added 16 digs.

Meadowdale 3, Oak Harbor 2: At Lynnwood, three Meadowdale players reached double-digits in kills in the Mavericks’ 25-27, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-7 non-league victory. Lynsey Rohrbach had 16 kills and three block kills, Payton Shrum had 12 kills and two block kills and Mara Eberth had 11 kills and 13 digs. Megan Nelson of Meadowdale (1-4 overall) had 47 assists, eight digs and three aces. Jessica Muzzall of Oak Harbor (2-4) had 16 kills, four blocks and two aces and Jennifer Jansen had 15 kills and two block kills.

Shoreline Christian 3, Concrete 0: At Shoreline, Shoreline Christian swept Concrete 25-10, 25-9, 25-22 in the Northwest 1A/2B match. Megan Bauman had eight aces and eight kills and Anne Marie Visser had 24 assists to lead the Crusaders (3-2 league, 4-2 overall) to victory.

Darrington 3, Friday Harbor 0: At Darrington, the Loggers defeated Friday Harbor in straight games by scores of 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 in the Northwest 1A/2B League match. Outside hitter Mandy Powell had eight kills and 25 digs and defensive specialist Kylynn Nations was 10-for-10 serving with three aces. Freshman middle blocker Jessica Brooks had three kills and four blocks and setter Kolby Fanning had 13 assists and five aces. Darrington is now 5-0 league and 5-1 overall.

North Sound Christian 3, Providence Classical Christian 0: At Lynnwood, Malorie Mahler had 15 assists and three aces, Chantelle Meeks had seven kills and two aces and Tori Speck had four kills, seven aces and six digs as North Sound Christian (2-0 league, 5-0 overall) defeated Providence Classical (0-2, 2-4) 25-18, 25-23, 25-17 in Northwest 1B action.
