Prep roundup: Edmonds-Woodway’s Heard rumbles for two second-half TDs in 12-0 win over Kamiak

EDMONDS — No score after the first quarter. No score after the second. Then the Heard finally got moving.
Edmonds-Woodway’s Tony Heard beat, banged, and clawed his way into the end zone twice on a wet field that had showers hammering down the entire game, leading the Warriors to a 12-0 victory Friday in a Wesco South contest at Edmonds District Stadium.
He racked up 171 yards on 23 carries, 135 of those coming in the second half after an injury early in the game. Heard was quick to give his offensive line all the praise.
“I just had to fight through the pain,” Heard said, referring to the play that took him out of the game for close to half a quarter. “I’m so proud of our offensive line, all the credit goes to them. I knew I had to be patient. I knew everything would work out. And we never gave up, and set a statement to other teams.”
E-W head coach John Gradwohl began running a play completely new to its offensive scheme and that proved to be the difference against a very shifty and powerful Kamiak defense.
“Fourty-three trap blast was a play that we just learned,” Gradwohl said. “The offensive line started getting confidence. Tony’s success is directly due to the people around him.”
Those plays began to wear down the Knights’ defense, as Heard wasn’t getting touched until he was 5 yards deep into the defense. The opposite was true for Kamiak, which struggled offensively. Kamiak managed to gain just 103 total yards of offense, 85 passing and 18 rushing.
The Warriors’ defense then began to inflict serious damage on the Knights. The first was a hit on running back Marcel Seely and another on quarterback Sam Ruppel by Heard. Both came in the same drive to end the third quarter and clearly shifted the momentum over to Woodway.
“Honestly, I thought he got rid of it (got the pass off) ‘cause he (Ruppel) was just standing there,” Heard said.
Now, Woodway prepares for a string of Wesco South matchups that will “make or break their season” according to Gradwohl.
