Prep volleyball roundup: Archbishop Murphy clinches top 2A seed

DUVALL — The Archbishop Murphy volleyball team clinched the top seed to the Class 2A District 1 tournament with a 3-1 victory over Cedarcrest Wednesday night.

After the teams split the first two sets, the Wildcats rallied for a 25-14, 18-25, 25-22, 25-19 victory in the Cascade Conference match. Murphy, which improved to 10-1 in league and overall, recorded 14 aces, 15 kills and 20 blocks as a team.

Despite keeping each set close, the Red Wolves were battling more than the Wildcats.

“I’ve never coached a team this sick, two were throwing up (Wednesday) and one (Tuesday),” said Christine Hillestad, Cedarcrest head coach. “About that fourth game it caught up to them. When you feel like that it’s tough to play your best.”

Shannon Bailey served three aces and had 21 digs for Cedarcrest (7-4) and Jessica Knoth finished with 10 kills.

South Whidbey 3, Granite Falls 2: At Granite Falls, after jumping out to a 2-0 lead, South Whidbey had to rally to win the Cascade Conference match 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 15-12. Allison Wood led the way for South Whidbey (6-5 in league and overall) with 22 kills and 12 digs. Audrey Murphy had 11 kills and three blocks for Granite Falls (2-9)

Lakewood 3, Coupeville 1: At Marysville, led by the 15 kills, 13 digs and seven assists of Liliya Kibitskaya, Lakewood defeated Coupeville 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22 in the Cascade Conference match. Sarah Boe had 16 digs and Peyton Mizell had 24 assists for the Cougars (4-7 in league and overall). Coupeville (3-9, 4-9) was led by Aulinde Maertens who had 10 digs and nine kills.

King’s 3, Sultan 0: At Shoreline, Anna Cesari had 20 assists and served five aces to lead King’s to the 25-21, 25-10, 25-8 victory over Sultan (0-11 in league and overall) in a Cascade Conference match. Jordan Irish had three blocks and 12 kills for King’s (12-0).
