Prep boys tennis: Jackson freshman wins district singles

STANWOOD — Youth was served Thursday as Jackson freshman Michael Chamerski edged Stanwood senior Kyle Koetje 6-4, 7-6 for the 4A District 1 singles championship.

Meanwhile, Shorewood’s Tristan Reni and Scott McConnell improved upon their third-place finish of last year by taking the district championship with a straight-sets win over the Edmonds-Woodway duo of Ryan Warren and Ian Southcote-Want.

The district’s third seeds to state will be decided by matches today.

Consolation—Reed Pecha-Zach Stockwell (Snohomish) def. Joe Pham-Brenden Beaver (Cascade) 6-4, 6-2; Kevin Taylor-Mitch Williamson (Jackson) def. Joe Kim-Chris Raunio (Mountlake Terrace) 6-4, 5-7, 7-6.

Third-place—Pecha-Caldwell vs. Taylor-Williamson, 3 p.m. today.

Meadowdale nets 3A title

3A District 1 meet: At Mt. Vernon, Meadowdale’s Alex Casper topped Shorecrest’s Jason Hollenbach-Landraitis 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match, earning the district’s top seed to state. Wesco No. 1 seed Scott Bohmke of Meadowdale bounced back from a semifinal loss to Hollenbach-Landraitis to reach the consolation final but that loss made the second-place match unecessary. Bohmke will be the alternate to state.

Nathan Bright and Mike Uppinghouse of Shorecrest defeated Caleb Unger and Taylor Pothier of Ferndale for the doubles championship. Chris Johnson and Andrew Olsen of Meadowdale came back from a quarterfinal loss to reach the consolation final, in which they won a third-set tiebreaker from Unger and Pothier to earn the district’s second state berth.
