Prep volleyball/soccer: Monroe, Marysville-Pilchuck miss out on 4A trophy matches

KENNEWICK — Monroe volleyball ended its season one victory shy of placing at state.

But not before putting an early scare into Mead.

Kylin Munoz had 27 kills and 13 digs, Nicole Reyling had 16 digs, and Monroe took an early 1-0 lead before falling 20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-13 to Mead in the consolation bracket Saturday at the 4A state volleyball tournament at the Toyota Center.

“We stunned them a bit,” Monroe head coach April Munoz said. “They came out with different blocking schemes against Kylin, but it didn’t work (in the first game) … She had a field day.”

“We played hard,” Munoz added. “I can’t be disappointed. I’m proud of the girls … We were passing on a dime in the first game.”

Mead moved on to play Kentwood for fourth and seventh place at state. Monroe placed eighth in 2007.

Megan Birch added 12 kills and nine digs and Kaitlyn Drew added 38 assists in the loss.

“It’s been a great season,” Munoz said of her team, which only fields two seniors. “I think (this year) we played better at state against better teams.”

Kentwood defeated Marysville-Pilchuck 25-14, 25-18, 27-25 to advance to the consolation matchup with Mead.

“We came out slow,” M-P head coach Shelly Johnson said, “But figured out how to score by the third game.”

Jade Thompson had 18 digs, Brittnay Fitzmaurice had 29 assists and Jenna Welsh had 14 kills to lead M-P in the season-ending loss.

Also Saturday, Edmonds-Woodway defeated Issaquah 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-23) in the consolation bracket and nearly upended Curtis, but fell 23-25, 15-25, 25-14, 25-23, 15-8. A win would have put the Warriors in the match for fifth and eighth place.

E-W took a 2-0 lead in sets against Curtis but couldn’t hang on.

Lewis &Clark won the state championship, defeating Kamiakin 25-12, 25-20, 25-22 in the title match.

Skyview blanked Olympia 25-17, 25-20, 26-24 for third place. Kentwood took fourth, edging Mead 19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11. Curtis captured fifth place with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-23 win over Puyallup.

2A state tournament: At Kennewick, Archbishop Murphy (16-4) took a 2-1 lead against Fife but couldn’t hold on, ultimately losing 26-24, 15-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-6 in the first round of consolation at the Toyota Center. The loss ended Archbishop Murphy’s season. Savannah Fletcher had seven blocks, Alyssa Smith had nine kills and Ashley Broadwell chipped in eight kills to lead the Wildcats.

Tumwater captured the state title, beating Selah 15-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-12 in the final.

Lynden took third place with a 25-21, 25-16, 26-24 win over Black Hills. Pullman was fourth, defeating Burlington-Edison 25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21. Fifth place went to West Valley of Spokane, which beat Mark Morris 25-21, 25-22, 25-19.

Girls soccer

Mead 3, Jackson 1: At Lakewood, the Jackson Timberwolves earned their first trophy since a third-place finish in 2005, placing fourth at the Class 4A state tournament. Freshman Cara Wegner scored the lone goal for Jackson. The fourth-place finish marked the third time in five trips to state that the Timberwolves have picked up some hardware. Jackson also finished fourth in its state debut in 2004. The Timberwolves can look forward to 2009 as it graduates one senior, captain Katie Reese.

Kennedy 2, Shorecrest 0: At Lakewood, Rebekah Kurle scored on a header from Amy Holland in the 31st minute and followed that up by scoring an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to lead Kennedy to third place in the 3A state tournament at Harry Lang Stadium. Shorecrest placed fourth, its first state finish since it was a 4A school in 1996. Caroline Towles and Kayla Obrycki split time in goal for Shorecrest (15-6-2). Chelsea Lockhart recorded the shutout for Kennedy (21-0-1).

Archbishop Murphy 3, East Valley-Yakima 0: At Lakewood, Archbishop Murphy placed third at 2A state for the second year in a row. Caroline Brawner assisted on a goal by Erin Ryan in the sixth minute, scored off an assist by Brittany Allen in the 46th minute and Archbishop Murphy (18-2-1) played all 21 of its players en route to the victory over East Valley of Yakima (17-3-0). Tasha Pabisz scored Murphy’s third and final goal in the 64th minute. “We started all of our seniors,” Murphy head coach Dick Henderson said, “And we finished the game with all of our seniors.” Sarah Carratt started in goal for Archbishop Murphy.

King’s 4, Highland 0: At Sumner, senior co-captain Kendall Thoreson scored twice to help King’s roll to a third-place finish in the 1A state tournament at Sunset Chev Stadium. King’s has placed at state every year since the girls soccer program began three years ago. “Kind of bittersweet in that we really wanted to finish first,” junior defender Hillary Quinn said. King’s also received goals from Hillary Zevenbergen (18th minute) and Julia Crosby (27th). Carolyn Dapper recorded the shutout for King’s (20-2-0). Highland fell to 17-2-0.

Boys soccer

Riverside Christian 2, Shoreline Christian 0: At Sumner, Jeremy Pynch scored two unassisted goals to lead Riverside Christian (13-6-0) over Shoreline Christian (12-7-0) in the third-place game in the 2B/1B state tournament at Sunset Chev Stadium. Shoreline Christian took fourth place after finishing second last year. Davis Wahlman started in goal for Shoreline Christian.
