MARYSVILLE — All it took was one more win and the Marysville-Pilchuck boys basketball team delivered Thursday night.
Needing a victory to secure a Class 4A District 1 playoff berth, the Tomahawks defeated Monroe 48-41 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School to punch their ticket to the postseason.
“It was a really close game,” M-P head coach Bary Gould said. “Monroe played very, very well. Tim Ohlsen especially.”
Ohlsen finished with a game-high 20 points for the Bearcats, who fell to 5-9 in league and 5-13 overall.
Gould then focused on his players, highlighting seniors Spencer Elwell and Nick Forsythe.
“(Elwell was) real consistent, especially in the second and fourth quarters,” Gould said. “He had six points in each of those quarters.”
Elwell finished a double-double performance with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.
Nick Forsythe had all 10 of his points in the first half.
“He basically carried us in the first half,” Gould said.
Now the Tomahawks (11-4, 12-6) can breathe a little sigh of relief, knowing that their season will continue beyond next week.
“We’re always looking for the ‘x’ in the paper,” Gould said of the Wesco North standings.
