MT. VERNON — Glacier Peak’s road to the Class 3A state girls basketball tournament became a bit more difficult Thursday night.

The Grizzlies lost 62-51 to Ferndale in a 3A District 1 tournament game at Mount Vernon High School.

Glacier Peak would have advanced to the district championship game with a victory. Now the Grizzlies need to win three consecutive loser-out games to get into the state tournament.

Glacier Peak coach Brian Hill said when the Grizzlies’ 6-foot-1 Marjorie Heard got into foul trouble and went to the bench in the second quarter, Ferndale was able to take advantage. Hill said Ferndale passed the ball inside into Ashley Honeycutt, who scored a game-high 17 points, to help build a 36-18 halftime advantage.

“It definitely kind of deflated our intensity in the second quarter,” Hill said of Heard being on the bench. “I’m not saying we would have won the game, but I definitely think it would have been a different scenario.”

Glacier Peak was outscored 20-7 in the quarter.

Glacier Peak trailed 48-29 at the beginning of the fourth quarter when they went to a full-court pressure defense. The switch created some turnovers and help the Grizzlies get to within eight points with two minutes to go, but Ferndale sealed the victory by making free throws.

Heard led Glacier Peak with 14.
