SHORELINE — Kamiak scored two early goals and held off a second-half surge for a 3-2 non-conference win over Shorewood Tuesday night at Shoreline Stadium.

Cassidy Seckman scored unassisted in the 10th minute and Hillary Hermes (Paige Littrell assist) added a second goal in the 15th minute to give the Knights (1-0 overall) an early 2-0 lead.

“I think (Kamiak’s) offense played really well,” Shorewood head coach Nathan Davis said. “Same with their midfield.”

Anastaja Norins (Kelsey Johnson assist) pulled Shorewood (0-1) back with a goal in the 42nd minute, but Rachel Simmons blasted a 30-yard free kick just under the crossbar in the 60th minute to put Kamiak ahead 3-1.

Davis said Shorewood was caught off-guard on the free kick because Kamiak set up like Simmons was going to bend the kick into the box instead of unleashing a rocket on goal.

“(Simmons) had good pace on it,” Davis said. “I think it took our whole team by surprise.”

Shorewood’s Norins (Hanna Clements assist) scored her second goal in the 70th minute, but Kamiak’s defense held strong for the rest of the game.

The Thunderbirds were able to create a few good chances in the second half, but overall Davis said Kamiak’s defense, especially Shelby Knowles in the sweeper role, denied Shorewood’s forwards from quality attempts on goal.

“Kamiak’s defense was stiff,” Davis said. “When (Shorewood) played well and moved the ball around the outside (Shorewood) was able to get some opportunities, but (Kamiak) is tough.”

Knowles, a junior, cleared a number of crosses and balls out of the box.

“She’s a really solid defender for (Kamiak),” Davis said. “She moved all over the place.”

Davis said Shorewood came out strong despite being down 2-0 at halftime.

“It was kind of an eye opener for the girls,” Davis said. “I think we came out and adjusted well.”
