MONROE — Down to the wire only begins to explain Monroe girls soccer.

In the 78th minute, Kaylie Sowler blasted a ball from 25 yards out, sliding it through the hands of Marysville-Pilchuck’s goalie for the eventual game-winner in Monroe’s 2-1 Wesco North victory on Wednesday night.

With the win, Monroe (10-4-2 in leauge and overall) leaped over Lake Stevens — which lost to Everett 2-1 in a shootout — to clinch the North’s first seed to the 4A District 1 playoffs. Monroe will host the Wesco South’s second-seeded Kamiak in a winner-to-state semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday.

M-P (7-8-1, 7-8-1) clinched the fourth seed from the Wesco North.

“This win is huge for us, it’s just so big,” Monroe head coach Kathleen Potthast said. “We have home field, and that’s a big thing … We had to win this game, we set team goals early in the season and one was to get to districts and now we are here.”

M-P scored the game’s first goal in the 44th minute, when Kiely Cordon broke away from the pack and scored unassisted.

But the Bearcats fired back, scoring one minute later to tie the score when Casey Nuemann passed the ball down the line to Kayla Browne, who cut in and shot from just inside the 18-yard line, the ball sailing over the goalie’s head and into the net, with Potthast deeming the shot “a rocket.”

Lynzee Felder played goalie for Monroe, a different role than her normal forward position.

“Our defense has really stepped it up, we are really keeping our shape back there and our leaders are doing a great job,” Potthast said, mentioning that team captains Alyssa Drew and Kaitlynn Chesemore were catalysts defensively, with Monroe outshooting M-P 27-6 in the game.
