Third-graders given dictionaries
The Arlington Kiwanis Club and the Friends of the Arlington Library recently donated 672 dictionaries to students in all the third-grade classes in the Arlington, Lakewood and Darrington school districts.
The dictionaries were gifts to each third-grader for their personal use at school or at home, Kiwanis club spokeswoman Jan Bauer said.
Edmonds club honors teacher
Chris Brown, a teacher at Scriber Lake High School, recently received the Edmonds Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds.
The award is given to people who show devotion to duty, self-sacrifice and exemplary action deserving of public recognition, club members said.
Brown developed a program at his school that allows students to experience activities such as backpacking, snowshoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing.
Wieland-Ward receives hero award
Jenny Wieland-Ward, executive director of Families and Friends of Violent Crime Victims, recently received an award from the Bank of America.
The bank named Wieland-Ward a local hero for her tireless support of crime victims and their families.
Wieland-Ward has been leading the nonprofit organization since 2002 and has been honored by the federal Department of Justice for her work on behalf of victims of violent crimes.
Bank of America awarded Wieland-Ward $5,000, which she contributed to the advocacy center. To learn more about the organization, go to www.fnfvcv.org.

Pilchuck Glass School auction
The Pilchuck Glass School’s 31st annual auction Oct. 23 raised $1.175 million for the private art school in north Snohomish County.
This figure includes proceeds from the auction as well as sponsorships, ticket sales and donations, the school’s spokeswoman said.
The auction results for 2009 are down slightly from the previous year because of lower ticket sales and reduced auction tour attendance, she said.
Snohomish Senior Center donation
Snohomish Seniors has received a $5,000 donation from the Everett Clinic Foundation for the health and nutrition program at the Snohomish Senior Center.
The foundation was established by clinic staff and physicians with the goal of providing ongoing philanthropic support to charitable organizations in Snohomish County.
The senior center program provides health clinics, support and education, exercise, therapeutic massage, medical equipment and meals for senior citizens
