Volunteer: Help hospice care group

Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County seeks a volunteer receptionist who is able to fill in at the front desk once a week and a volunteer barber who can provide haircuts to hospice patients in south Snohomish County.

The volunteer receptionist can choose when they want to volunteer. A helpful personality and reception or telephone answering experience are preferred. The position requires a year-long commitment.

The volunteer barber, licensed in the state of Washington, is needed to make house calls to hospice patients one or two times every month in the Lynnwood, Edmonds, Bothell, Mountlake Terrace, Mill Creek and Shoreline areas.

Nominate: Heroes for PAWS award

PAWS requests nominations for its Champion for Animals award, which goes to local people who have shown inspirational compassion, leadership and initiative in helping animals.

Nominations may come from anyone touched by the person’s project or activities. Nominees must live in the Puget Sound area, and there is no age restriction. The recipient will be presented with the award at PAWS Wild Night on March 27 and also recognized in PAWS magazine.

The deadline for nominations is Feb. 19.

Breakfast: Support senior center

The East County Senior Center plans to host a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The cost is $4 for adults and $2.75 for children under 12. Proceeds are used for the general operating funds of the center. Reservations are not required.

East County Senior Center is at 276 Sky River Parkway in Monroe.

Compete: Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot

Everett Elks Lodge 479 will hold its 36th annual Hoop Shoot event on Monday at the Everett High School gymnasium, 2416 Wetmore Ave., in Everett.

Registration for the free contest is at 5:30 p.m., and the competition for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 begins at 6 p.m.

The national free-throw contest offers three age divisions: 8 to 9, 10 to 11 and 12 to 13. Winners from this contest will compete against other Lodge winners in the district event on Jan. 30 in Mount Vernon.

The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores will have a chance to advance to qualify for the national finals in Springfield, Mass.

Learn: Amateur radio club classes

The Island County Amateur Radio Club is offering a “Ham University” course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 6 in Coupeville.

The class will teach about ham radio and prepare people to take the exam needed to get a license to operate amateur radios.

A second course will be held on March 6 and 11 for licensees who would like to get the general license. The cost for each class is $25.

The Ham University classes will be held in the County Commissioners Hearing Room located downstairs in the Courthouse Annex Building, Room B102, at 1 NE 6th St. in Coupeville.
