PREP ROUNDUP: Monroe knocks off North soccer leader

Published 11:11 pm Tuesday, April 20, 2010

LAKE STEVENS — Coaches Ryan Schaeffer of Monroe and Lake Stevens’ Scott Flanders are developing quite a rivalry. Over the last couple of years, the two teams have played a number of close games. Tuesday night’s was no different.

After falling to the Vikings earlier in the season, Monroe (4-4-2) utilized multi-goal games from both Jorge Avila (10th and 46th minute) and Andrew Barrett (12th and 66th minute both assisted by Chris Sowler) to knock off the Wesco North league-leading Lake Stevens, 5-4.

“We got a pretty good rivalry going with Lake Stevens … they’re a very good team,” said Monroe head coach Ryan Schaeffer. “So coming in tonight, knowing that we had a disappointing loss on Friday, we knew we needed some points.”

The Bearcats fell behind early, though, when Jake Orwiller scored in the third minute for Lake Stevens with a beautiful corner kick.

Avila and Barrett, however, answered with two quick goals for the Bearcats as they took a 2-1 lead. Edmond Fischer (Avila assist) then followed with a goal in the 22nd minute to make it 3-1.

“The guys just kept battling and battling, I gotta give them a lot of credit,” Schaeffer said of his team. “I’m really proud of the way my boys came out today emotionally.”

Lake Stevens (8-2-1) answered with a Nic Rowe goal in the 25th minute (Vasily Bogdanoff assist) to cut the lead to one, but Avila and Barrett poured in their second goals early on in the second half to keep the Vikings at bay.

A Josh Otusanya penalty kick in the 70th minute and Orwiller goal in the 80th minute (Bogdanoff assist) were too little too late for the Vikings.

Jose Perez Jr. was strong all game in goal for Monroe, helping them to the important win.

“It keeps us alive a little bit longer,” Schaeffer said.

Arlington 2, Snohomish 0: At Arlington, David Lopez got Arlington off to a quick start in their Wesco North game, finishing off a rebound of a Jake Smith shot in the fourth minute. From there, it was a solid defensive effort and great goaltending from keeper Corben Anderson that earned the Eagles an important win over the second-place Panthers. The win puts Arlington just a half game behind Snohomish now in the division. Arlington got an insurance goal in the 79th minute from Smith, who scored on a breakaway.
