MARYSVILLE — Despite having four regular starters out, Archbishop Murphy posted a 3-0 Cascade Conference boys soccer win over Lakewood at Lakewood High School Wednesday night.

With players out of town on spring break or injured, Archbishop Murphy had to rely heavily on its bench and JV play

ers. The Wildcats had already clinched the league’s No. 1 seed to the 2A District 1 playoffs, but the win allowed backup players to get some valuable time on the field.

“It was a good opportunity for some of those (JV) players to step up and they’ve responded,” said Archbishop Murphy coach Eddie Fernandez, who has had to fill in backups at multiple positions for two games in a row.

All three of the Wildcats’ goals came in the first half. Cobi Weyers, who normally plays on the defensive line, moved up to the midfield and scored his first goal of the season on a Tyler Ptacek assist. Ptacek, usually a non-starter, then put a goal in on an assist from Riley Rayner. Rayner scored Archbishop Murphy’s final goal, assisted by Sean Ryan on a pass that came from midfield and past the Lakewood defense that was pressing up the field.

Jordan Trinka was in goal for Archbishop Murphy (11-2 in league, 13-2 overall). Lakewood fells to 4-9, 5-10.
