Dragon Lake putting out some big trout

Pat Maher of Everett had a great time fishing Dragon Lake in Quesnel, B.C. last week, as did a number of members of the Evergreen Fly Fishing Club of Everett.
Maher picked up one rainbow that was 29 inches long with a girth of 18 inches. He estimated the fish at 13.6 pounds, which is the fish of a lifetime.
Pat was using a chironomid pattern called the Dragon Slayer, basically a wine colored fly with a silver rib and a gold bead.
Pat noted that the fishing has been good at Dragon, which is about a 10-hour drive from here.
I’m a member of the Evergreen club, and other members on the trip reported fish of 7, 8 and 9 pounds. The also mentioned some days when they caught no fish at all.
Dragon can be a tough lake to figure out because it’s a big lake and isn’t crammed with fish. You can see bugs hatching all over the place and not have a fish around.
But when you find the fish, they can be good. I’ve fished the lake for decades, but I didn’t go this year. Sounds like a big mistake.
