Bet on the Bar for kings this Saturday

Marine areas 9 and 10 open Saturday morning for the popular hatchery chinook summer season, and things are looking good. There are plenty of kings being taken in the islands and on the Strait, and there’s no reason – according to All Star Charters owner/skipper Gary Krein of Everett – that there shouldn’t be fish in central Sound.

The only major uncertainty, according to Krein, is whether most of the fish will be found on Possession Bar or farther west, toward Port Townsend. One year it’s one, and the next year the other, he said.

He’s betting on the bar, saying there has been plenty of bait around, and good numbers of incidental kings being hooked by coho fishermen in Area 10. It’s a minus tide on opening morning, but Krein says that’s a favorable situation for Possession, that a minus there tends to fish well.

Try a Kingfisher 4-inch spoon in green/white or black/white, Krein sys, or a Tomic or Ace Hi plug in white or mother of pearl.
