SHORELINE — In a battle of the Cascade Conference’s top two volleyball teams, the King’s frontline proved too powerful for Archbishop Murphy to handle in a 25-21, 25-23 and 25-19 three-set sweep Tuesday at King’s H.S.

King’s (12-0 league, 12-0 overall) senior Joclyn Kirton had a match-high 15 kills while Payton Young added 11 kills to go with her 10 digs. Another Knights hitter, Caitlin Fransen, had 16 digs, eight kills and three aces to help keep King’s unbeaten.

“I think at the end of the evening, it was probably our offensive balance,” King’s head coach Steve Bain answered in reference to the key factor of the match. “We were able to kill more balls than they were and it comes down to what you are able to do in transition.”

An exuberant crowd in support of Senior Night at King’s provided a “playoff-like atmosphere” according to Bain.

“I thought both teams played extremely well defensively,” Bain added. “I was really impressed with Archbishop’s serving and passing. It kept us off balance most of the night.”

The Wildcats (9-2, 9-2) were led by seniors Marea Holmes who had 14 digs and 10 kills, Hannah Linsenmayer who finished with 35 digs and three aces as well as Alex Flake who provided 37 assists.

“I was also pleased with our kids’ ability to make big plays at big times which was key in our ability to close the match out in three (sets),” said Bain. “It was the kind of match you want to have at the end of the season.”
