TACOMA — The wife of a suspected and wounded bank robber began a crowdfunding site for him right before she was arrested.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that 26-year-old Brittney Winston launched the campaign on Fundly.com, contending her husband is an Army veteran and a victim of racial profiling. She says he was at the bank he’s accused of robbing only to open an account. KIRO 7 News also says Winston messaged one of their anchors to argue their innocence.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old Michael David Winston II attempted to rob a Lakewood Bank of America. He’s currently in the hospital after getting shot five times in the head, torso and leg by an armored car guard.

Winston is a former JBLM soldier. The Army says he separated from military service in February.

Authorities arrested Brittney Winston on Thursday, charging her with being the getaway driver.

As of Friday morning, the crowdfunding site had raised $110 from 26 donors.
