Trimaran with 3 crew finishes first in Race to Alaska

KETCHIKAN, Alaska — A three-man team has finished first in the motorless Race to Alaska.

The Ketchikan Daily News reports Al Hughes, Graeme Esarey and Matt Steverson left Victoria, B.C., on a 26-foot trimaran, the Elsie Piddock.

They and reached Ketchikan, Alaska, Friday after five days, 55 minutes.

A trimaran is a sailboat with a main hull and two outrigger hulls.

More than 100 people in more than 50 boats began the race. The first leg was from Port Townsend to Victoria, and wasn’t counted in the official time.

The winners of the race covering 750 miles receive $10,000. Second place finishers receive a set of steak knives.

Racers were not allowed to use motors or receive outside help.
