Seahawks camp Day 2: Helfet out, Pinkins in

Day 2 of the Seattle Seahawks’ training camp is in the books. Here’s some notes and observations from Sunday:

– Tight end Cooper Helfet was not on the field Sunday, and it was revealed after practice that Helfet suffered a cracked bone in his foot. Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said it’s unknown how long Helfet will be out. Helfet had 25 catches for 315 yards and two TDs over the past two seasons, serving primarily as Seattle’s No. 3 tight end.

– In Seattle’s three-way strong-side linebacker battle, it was Eric Pinkins who received the snaps with the first team Sunday. Pinkins, Mike Morgan and Cassius Marsh are all competing for the spot vacated by Bruce Irvin. Morgan received the first-team snaps Saturday.

– In one of camp’s other position battles, it was Jeremy Lane who received the snaps with the first team at right cornerback Sunday. DeShawn Shead took the first-team snaps Saturday. Lane and Shead both saw time there toward the end of last season following the release of Cary Williams. When the Seahawks switched to their nickel defense, Shead stayed on the outside while Lane moved into the slot.

– Garry Gilliam, slated to start at left tackle, took another step in his recovery from knee surgery as he participated in some of Seattle’s 11-on-11 scrimmaging Sunday. Gilliam, who had a cyst removed from his knee during the offseason, participated in position drills Saturday, but not in scrimmaging. Gilliam played about half the snaps with the first team, with Bradley Sowell filling in when Gilliam took snaps off.

– Rookie running back C.J. Prosise sat out Sunday. Prosise, a third-round pick in this year’s draft out of Notre Dame, suffered a hamstring strain early during Saturday’s practice.

– Archbishop Murphy High School graduate Taniela Tupou spent his second straight day playing with the defense, and he’s now listed on Seattle’s roster as a defensive tackle. Tupou, who played DT at the University of Washington, transitioned to fullback during offseason activities, but now seems slated primarily for the defensive side of the ball.

– The Seahawks made one roster move as they waived receiver Tyler Slavin with an injury designation and signed tight end Clayton Echard. Echard is a rookie free agent out of Missouri who measures in at 6-foot-4 and 261 pounds. Slavin was signed to a futures contract in February, and if he clears waivers he will go onto Seattle’s injured-reserve list.

– As for the action on the field, the defense had the upper hand Sunday, with the offense unable to come up with the explosive plays it was able to muster during Saturday’s opening day of camp. The day’s best plays: 1) Shead made a great play to tip a Russell Wilson pass, then dived to make the interception just off the turf; 2) The offense pulled off a trick play when quarterback Jake Heaps threw a backward pass to Deshon Foxx, who turned and threw about 30 yards to Zac Brooks across the field.

– Finally, a celebrity sighting:
