General notes from Thursday’s Day 5 of Seattle Seahawks training camp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center:
Who’s out?
The list of players sitting of practice out is growing. Let’s group them into categories:
– Tight end Jimmy Graham and running back Thomas Rawls remain out and on Seattle’s physically-unable-to-perform list. However, coach Pete Carroll said both are now considered day to day as they push hard to make it back.
– Strong safety Kam Chancellor (groin) and receiver Doug Baldwin (lower leg) both missed their second straight practices, while defensive end Frank Clark (calf) missed his third straight. Carroll described all the injuries as minor.
– Running back Zac Brooks joined fellow rookie C.J. Prosise as being sidelined because of tightness in their hamstrings.
– Two players had to be carted off because of injuries sustained during practice, those being fullback/tight end Brandon Cottom and tight end Ronnie Shields. Carroll said he thought both suffered Achilles injuries.
– Others who sat out Thursday’s practice included linebacker Brock Coyle (oblique), defensive tackle Sealver Siliga (calf), receiver Antwan Goodley, defensive end Montese Overton and full back Tre Madden (shoulder).
– The Seahawks also made a pair of roster subtractions, officially placing defensive end Chris Clemons on the retired list and waiving long snapper Drew Ferris. Ferris being waived leaves rookie free agent Nolan Frese as the long snapper.
Who’s in?
– Seattle filled its two open roster spots by signing two players, both of whom had spent time with the Seahawks before. One was running back Cameron Marshall, who was brought in because of the dwindling depth at the position. Indeed, Carroll said he had to be careful about not overworking Christine Michael and Alex Collins, who were the only healthy running backs left on the roster. The other player signed was strong safety Keenan Lambert, who spent time in camp with the Seahawks last year and happens to be Chancellor’s half brother.
– With Madden sitting out and Cottom injured during practice, it left Archbishop Murphy High School grad Taniela Tupou as the only healthy fullback available. Tupou, a rookie free agent who spent most of the summer being switched from defensive tackle to fullback, had been moved back to defensive tackle for the first three days of camp. However, Thursday was his second straight day on offense, and with the injuries it seems likely he’ll be staying there for a while, despite having his right hand wrapped up after breaking a knuckle earlier in camp.
– Defensive tackle Jordan Hill, who was rested Tuesday, was back participating Thursday.
– There was more shuffling with the first unit on defense. The surprise was seeing Tharold Simon lining up at right cornerback with the 1s. The first four days saw DeShawn Shead and Jeremy Lane alternating days with the first unit, so it seems Simon has shown enough to join the mix. Also, it was Mike Morgan’s turn to play with the first team at strong-side linebacker, and rookie Jarran Reed received time with the first unit at defensive tackle.
– There was also this visit to practice:

Thursday’s highlight performer
The surprise performer of Thursday’s practice was tight end Brandon Williams. The free agent signing took advantage of Graham being out and Luke Willson (ankle) being limited, making several catches, including a pair of touchdowns from Russell Wilson. Williams, a three-year veteran, was a low-key signing during the offseason, considering he had just four catches in three seasons. But the University of Oregon alum was a regular special teams performer with Carolina a couple years ago, and Carroll had positive things to say about him after practice.
I’m gone
I will be gone from Seahawks camp the next three days as I have other assignments. I’ll be back when camp resumes next Tuesday. In the interim, check our sports main page for Seahawks updates.
