Fireworks at Seahawks practice as Bennett, Sowell tussle

There were more fireworks at Seahawks practice Sunday. This time it was defensive end Michael Bennett and tackle Bradley Sowell who got into a heated confrontation that required all kinds of teammate intervention. Neither participated during the rest of practice, though they weren’t kicked off the field.

Here’s what Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had to say afterwards:

The audio isn’t great on that video (I’m still experimenting with the video aspect), but what he essentially said is that Bennett is a passionate and competitive guy who was sticking up for a young teammate (Josh Shirley), but that Bennett needs to keep his poise. Bennett and Sowell ended up walking off the field together, so Carroll described it as a perfect illustration of leaving those type of things on the field.

On the injury front, three players left Thursday’s preseason game against Minnesota:

– Linebacker K.J. Wright is fine and was a full participant in practice Sunday.

– Tight end Nick Vannett has a high-ankle sprain and the team doesn’t know the severity of the injury, but Carroll said Vannett was “surprisingly feeling pretty good.”

– Defensive tackle Jaran Reed has a sore toe, and again the team isn’t sure how serious the injury is.

As for those who didn’t play Thursday:

– Tight end Jimmy Graham underwent tests over the weekend on his knee, and Carroll said the results were “very positive.” However, Carroll said the team will continue to be careful with Graham.

– Running back Thomas Rawls is now a full participant in practice. Carroll said Rawls looks “very good,” and that everything is on track for Rawls to be ready to play in a couple weeks.

– Tackle J’Marcus Webb was a full participant and should be able to play in this Thursday’s preseason game against Dallas.

– Both linebacker Brock Coyle (calf) and running back C.J. Prosise (hamstring) didn’t practice, but they could be back Monday.

Lastly, some exciting long-snapper news. Nolan Frese had a couple shaky moments snapping the ball against the Vikings, and Sunday we saw linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis taking on some of the long-snapping duties in practice. How did he do?

“He was very careful,” Carroll said. “But the ball got there, we placed it down, we kicked it. He did fine.”

The Seahawks already had a revolving door at long snapper during the offseason. This could suggest there’s more movement at long snapper to come.
