Snohomish County lowlands could get 1-2 inches of snow

EVERETT — Snow may be on the way to the lowlands of Snohomish County from Sunday night into Monday.

Cold air is expected to blow in Sunday, dropping temperatures below freezing. Between 1 and 2 inches of snow are possible, said Johnny Burg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Seattle office.

In the mountain passes, a winter storm warning was in effect Saturday into Sunday morning. The mountains likely will see a foot or more of new snow, Burg said.

“This is what looks to be possible right now. Things aren’t certain,” Burg said. “Forecasting snow around here is very difficult.”

The cold weather is likely to stick around into Wednesday, with temperatures hovering around freezing. Later in the week, it should get a bit warmer.

“Pay attention to the forecast. Just be prepared for the possibility of the some lowland snow,” Burg said. “If you’re out and about Sunday night and Monday morning, give yourself plenty of time and go slow. Those roads might be slick.”

For those who plan to head over Stevens or Snoqualmie passes, it’s important to be prepared for long delays and possible closures, Washington State Patrol trooper Heather Axtman said. Speed limits also may be lowered during winter weather. Troopers are on hand to catch drivers who don’t obey variable speed limit signs, she said.

“Make sure you come prepared with chains and with blankets and snacks in case you get stuck in traffic for hours,” Axtman said. “Make sure your gas tank is full.”
