Cedarcrest girls overcome loss of key player

Sydney Turner was the Cedarcrest girls basketball team’s leading scorer during fall play, but the junior didn’t get a chance to step onto the court for the regular season after suffering a stress fracture in her leg. The Red Wolves persevered through the loss by emphasizing defense and a balanced scoring attack, and posted a 14-6 overall record (9-3 Cascade Conference) during the regular season.

“We had to find somebody to fill (Sydney’s) spot. We experimented and moved people around,” Cedarcrest coach Brad Knowles said. “Defense has been our strong point, and our top five scorers are within 1.5 points per game of each other. For us, it comes down to whether we’re hot or cold shooting. That’s the bottom line.”

The Red Wolves earned the conference’s No. 4 seed into the 2A District 1-2 tournament, which comes with a first-round bye. They play host to Anacortes or Granite Falls on Friday.

“We have the word ‘SunDome’ written on the wall of our gym. Our goal is to get to state, but we know our district tournament will be tough,” Knowles said. “It’s been a good season so far. We’ll just take it one game at a time and do our best.”
