EVERETT — An Arlington woman is part of a salmonella outbreak that has affected 16 people in Washington and 372 people nationally.

The cases have been diagnosed in people who were in contact with live poultry.

Seven of the 16 people sickened in the state are younger than 5. A total of five people have been hospitalized, state health department officials said Friday.

People infected with salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after being infected. In some cases, it can cause serious illness.

Live poultry can carry salmonella bacteria, which is contagious. The best protection is to wash your hands thoroughly after touching live poultry or anything in the area where birds live and roam, health officials say.

In addition to Snohomish County, people have been infected in Chelan, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, King, Kitsap, Kittitas, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Yakima and Whatcom counties.
