Great Pumpkin Race a smashing success

The Great Pumpkin Race is hosted each year by Snohomish and Glacier Peak high schools. The cross-country race for elementary school students was held Oct. 9 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Nearly 500 kids took part in 800-meter, 1,200-meter and 1,600-meter races, based on age. Top finishers received pumpkins donated by Bailey’s Farms.
Participants were encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations. An entire truck bed was filled with canned food for the Snohomish Food Bank.
The top three schools at the event, which was scored like a flighted cross country invitational, were Riverview, Dutch Hill and Machias.
