2017 season “a mixed bag” for Kamiak cross country

The Kamiak cross country team’s season has “been a mixed bag,” according to Knights coach Charley LeWarne.
“On the boys side we’re young, and it’s taken awhile for kids to emerge into top-seven roles. It’s been a work in progress,” he said.
“On the girls side, it’s also been a bit tough in that we have two frontrunners who are as good as anybody out there, but we haven’t had anybody to fill in (behind them) to round out the top seven.”
Freshman Carp Mukai has been Kamiak’s top runner on the boys side, while Alicia Anderson (who finished second in the 1,600-meter run at last spring’s 4A track and field state meet) and Leah Clark have led the Knights’ girls squad.
“Carp has been our team leader despite the fact that he’s only 14. He’s had a steep learning curve,” LeWarne said. “Alicia and Leah both went to camps over the summer to work and learn more about the sport than they knew before, and came in with a solid amount of miles under their belt and ready to go.”
