Prep sports notebook: King’s soccer sweeps awards

The King’s girls soccer team claimed all three North Sound Conference awards for its sport.

Senior forward Callie Wright, who led the Knights with 37 goals and six assists, was named the league’s offensive player of the year.

Senior defender Emma Culberson, who netted three goals and anchored a defense that yielded just four goals in 10 conference matches, was awarded defensive player of the year.

King’s coach Nicole Gabelein was named the league’s coach of the year after guiding the Knights (18-3) to the conference title. King’s reached the Class 1A state quarterfinals and beat three KingCo 4A teams during the regular season, including 4A state qualifier Redmond.

WIAA Athletes of the Week

The following six local athletes received Athlete of the Week honors from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association during the fall sports season.

Tre Long, sr., Lake Stevens football (Week 11): Long completed 15 of 16 passes for a season-high 357 yards and three touchdowns in a 56-42 win over Curtis on Nov. 9 in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs. The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 80 yards and two scores.

Devon Martinka, sr., Stanwood volleyball (Week 9): Martinka rallied the Spartans to a five-set win over Everett on Oct. 22 with 25 kills, 20 digs and seven aces.

Naomi Smith, jr., King’s girls cross country (Week 9): Smith, the eventual 1A state champion, cruised to the bi-district title on Oct. 27 with a time of 18 minutes, 16.1 seconds at South Whidbey High School. It was the fastest girls time of the day in all classifications at the Northwest District championship meet.

Adah Hall, soph., Meadowdale volleyball (Week 5): Hall helped rally the Mavericks to a five-set win over Everett on Sept. 27 with 32 assists and 23 digs.

Blake Rybar, jr., Monroe football (Week 4): Rybar rushed for 175 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries in a 42-10 win over Mariner on Sept. 21.

Tyler Massena, sr., Snohomish football (Week 3): Massena totaled 186 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns in the Panthers’ 49-21 win over Shorewood on Sept. 14. He also blocked a kick and recorded a tackle for loss on defense.
