STANWOOD — A man with a history of fleeing police was arrested, once again, for allegedly trying to flee police.
The 40-year-old man, who was last known to live in Spokane, has been convicted of more than a dozen felonies since 2000. At least five were for eluding police.
In 2009, he was arrested for assaulting three officers by punching, kicking, scratching and biting them, according to charging papers filed at the time. Prosecutors wrote that he was “extremely dangerous.”
More recently, he was identified as a suspect in a burglary April 6, when he allegedly stole “rare pictures” and a Tiffany lamp from a house in the Arlington area.
A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy had been looking for the man for months, according to a report filed in Snohomish County Superior Court. He eventually learned the suspect was staying in a house on Old Highway 99 and 332nd Street NW, north of Stanwood.
Shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, the deputy was waiting at the intersection when he spotted the suspect’s vehicle, a white Chevrolet TrailBlazer. It reportedly rolled through a stop sign and then took off, its engine loudly revving down Old Highway 99.
When the deputy turned on his lights for a traffic stop, the vehicle briefly slowed as if it to pull over, but then quickly accelerated , documents say.
The suspect reportedly drove onto southbound I-5, reaching speeds up to 100 mph. He then exited on 236th Street, weaving into oncoming traffic, according to court papers.
North of Arlington, the car ran over spike strips that had been placed near the 8300 block of Grandview Road. He allegedly got out of the car and ran.
The deputy, who was by himself, got out of his car and gave chase. He yelled at the man to stop, warning that he would shoot.
They ran up a hillside covered in sticker bushes. It was dark. The deputy fired a stun gun but missed.
They both had trouble navigating the terrain.
The deputy wrote that he kicked the suspect several times in the arms and stomach to keep him on the ground.
The deputy tried the stun gun again, but again it didn’t appear to work.
Eventually, more officers showed up and arrested the suspect. With him was a bag containing 161 grams of methamphetamine, according to court papers.
The man was booked Monday into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of attempting to elude, drug possession, burglary and a warrant from another agency.
He remained in jail Friday with bail set at $50,000.
